Ross Burns has recently retired from the Australian Foreign Service after assignments which included several countries of the eastern Mediterranean, including Syria. Currently pursuing his archaeological and historical interests fulltime, he is the author of Monuments of Syria, the first modern study of that country's rich archaeological heritage.

DAMASCUS

The book is written with love by a person with superior knowledge of this marvelous city. Completed by excellent maps ,it gives a very thorough description of how the city of Damascus evolved and changed in the course of centuries.
The book is to be recommended to anyone eager to learn more. Maybe the best among the recent publications

"Damascus A History" an account of the mother of all cities.

"Damascus A History" is a book for all those who love Damascus or those who heard of its fame since ancient times. I myself lived in Damascus for fourteen years and can very much attest to the veracity of the book. I was enchanted most by the old section of the city which is now protected as a national heritage.

The book is comprehensive in that it showcases the city throughout all ages with illustrations that are extremely informative.I would like to highlight a statement that the author wrote at the end of his book which will ring true for ever

"Without venturing into too many fanciful 'what ifs',it seems reasonable to suggest that without Damascus, neither Christianity nor Islam would exist in their current forms as great world faiths."

I simply say that this book will satisfy both the scholar and the layman.

Deserves to be the standard reference in English for anyone interested in this language family

This book is like a big piece of candy for anyone interested in the Turkic languages. Routledge's Language Family Descriptions series offers single-chapter summaries of the grammars and lexicons of the major members of a family, and their Turkic volume published in 1998 continues the tradition with strong contributions from the leading Turkologists of our time.

There are six chapters on the family as a whole: The Speakers of Turkic Languages (Hendrik Boeschoten), The Turkic Peoples: A Historical Sketch (Peter B. Golden), The Structure of Turkic (Lars Johanson), The Reconstruction of Proto-Turkic and the Genetic Question (Andras Rona-Tas), The History of Turkic (Lars Johanson) and Turkic Writing SYstems (Andras Rona-Tas). The contributions of Johanson and Andras-Rona Tas are extremely helpful for understanding the isoglosses which divide the Turkic family into its various subfamilies, and they give a good overview of the controversies on the reconstruction of proto-languages.

Then there are single chapters on each language or, in a few cases, collections of unstandardized dialects. These are Old Turkic (Marcel Erdal), Middle Kipchak (Arpad Berta), Chaghatay (Hendrik Boeschoten and Marc Vandamme), Ottoman Turkish (Celia Kerslake), Turkish (Eva A. Csato and Lars Johanson), Turkish dialects (Bernt Brendemoen), Azerbaijanian (Claus Schonig), Turkmen (Schonig), Turkic languages of Iran (Gerhard Doerfer), Tatar and Bashkir (Berta), West Kipchak languages (Berta), Kazakh and Karakalpak (Mark Kirchner), Nogay (Eva A. Csato and Birsel Karakoc), Kirghiz (Kirchner), Uzbek (Boeschoten), Uyghur (Reinhard F. Hahn), Yellow Uyghur and Salar (Hahn), South Siberian Turkic (Schonig), Yakut (Marek Stachowski and Astrid Menz), and Chuvash (Larry Clark).

There's also a chapter on the Turkish language reform written by Bernt Brendemoen, though I feel that Geoffrey Lewis' The Turkish Language Reform: A Catastrophic Success is the best popular introduction to the affair. I should also note that Marcel Erdal's presentation of Old Turkic is vastly expanded in his later monograph A Grammar of Old Turkic (Amsterdam: Brill, 2004).

My only complaint about this delightful reference is that a number of typos are present, especially in Arpad Berta's contribution on Tatar and Bashkir. These pose little problem for those with some previous experience with the Turkic languages, but may confuse many readers. Shame on Routledge for not correcting these even in the paperback reprint of 2006. Still, this is *the* contemporary introduction to the Turkic family in English, and I recommend it to all linguaphiles.

Useful, but wildly overpriced

This is a good source for readers to get a feel for the Turkic language family as a whole, as well as an introduction to the various languages that make it up. The depth of coverage varies from one language to another: Turkish and Uzbek are the most extensively described, while some of the others get more cursory treatment. All of the descriptions are written in accord with the approach propounded by the major editor of the book, Lars Johanson.

The price of the book, at 320 dollars, is outrageous, and has doubled since it was first published. I thus suspect most potential readers will seek copies in libraries and then photocopy the parts that are of most interest to them.

Great source from prominent scholars... Unfortunately, Turkic languages have been neglected for a long time for several reasons... The only thing missing in this nice reference book is a nice map. The map that was provided at the beginning is really bad.

Shaun Gallagher is Professor and Chair of Philosophy and Cognitive Sciences at the University of Central Florida and Research Professor of Philosophy and Cognitive Science at the University of Hertfordshire. A good introduction

Although the language is a little advanced for anyone unfamiliar with analytic philosophy, this book is an accessible introduction to phenomenology from the perspective of analytic philosophy of mind. It presents new issues by reformatting valuable phenomenological ideas in terms that are easy for an analytical philosopher to understand and work with. I am working on a thesis project on phenomenology and I am an analytical philosopher, I found this book extremely helpful.

Clear, concise, and insightful

This is absolutely the best introduction to modern literary theory, and I have read them all! He introduces the theories in an historical narrative, explaining how and why they arose. He discusses the major figures in theory, and includes a valuable guide to further reading. His explanations of the abstruse and arcane world of literary theory are models of clarity and conciseness. I teach an introductory class on literary theory, and this is the book I use, chosen after carefully reviewing all available options.

Not for Beginners

Hans Bertens' comprehensive analysis of the core literary theories is a good tool for those who are already familiar with the methods and issues involving poststructuralism, New Criticism, Marxism, etc. and would like more of an advanced philosophical analysis of the schools of criticism. But if you are new to the subject, I would suggest finding an easier read. Throughout the his analyses, Bertens' text is vague to a considerable degree and he has a habit of jumping all over the place. This may produce more difficulty for those who are new to this area of literature and who need a concrete, upfront foundation in the various theoretical methods. To make matters worse, the text was written with the European/British student in mind, so the language may be more difficult to grasp.

Good Explanations but So-So Writing

Bertens did a good job in explaining and demonstrating with examples the main points of the various literary approaches and other related topics, like in the discussion of language as an arbitary system of signs, he showed how -- in theory -- the word "nerd" acquired its meaning. However, there are many typos and the writing is inconsistent. Moreover, wordiness leads to many confusions. I suggest that, before you go into a chapter, read the summary, which is more accessible, to get a feel of the topic.

Great perspective of teaching directing

This is probably one of the few books that actually breaks down the roles and responsibility of the directing profession. There are some segments I do not agree with, but like many readings, we have to take our own perspective. If you are looking to become a serious director or need to find a structure to teach directing, this book is a good start.

Such an insightful and excellent book

This book it a fantastic tool in learning the ins and outs of directing. Katie Mitchell definitely has a 'process' and a very specific one too. It is based on research, more research and accuracy. It is through this approach that she creates the world of the play in true accurate form on stage - each actor knowing exactly where they are, what they are doing and most importantly - why. You would be surprised how obvious this is when you see an actor on stage who doesn't know these things. As well as describing in detail the process of building the play, she talks about things like working with designers, actors, choreographers and talks about things like fear management on the first day of rehearsals, and what to do when actors quarrel! She really understands actors and knows what they go through during her process.

This book as a fascinating read probably the best theatre book I have read. It is easy to understand and doesn't waffle on with cryptic director speak, and hard to understand theatre jargon. It is systematic, clear, and I would highly recommend it to any director, and even actor. Yes, her process is a LOT of hard work, and thats good. It is essential work to understanding the play and the writers intentions.

Essential for the beginner. A clear and precise methodology that will organize your efforts and allow you to get the best from your actors. I am directing my third play and I wish I had read this book earlier. Following Ms. Mitchell's guidance has given me tremendous confidence while working with actors. If you follow her process you will be able to answer questions, set scenes and give your actors the best chance to succeed.
