A great book, with a sensitive and humanistic approach

This is a great book! I'm amazed by the sensitive and humanistic approach taken by the author to describe the lives of these extraordinary women. He manages to make them even more fascinating to me than they were before I began to read his book. And I really like the "spiritual" twist he's put in the biographical elements of these imperial women. I find that very unique and extremely interesting. The book is also graced by the wonderful and lively drawings depicting the imperial women, made by the author himself!

This book displays a great deal of creativity and artistic appeal. I consider it like a real little gem!

Fantastic must-have book for fashion lovers

This really is an essential addition to the bookcase: Malcolm Barnard has done an amazing job of selecting must-read essays on fashion.
It includes classic readings from Barthes, Veblen, Elizabeth Wilson, Umberto Eco, Ulrich Lehmann, Tamsin Blanchard, Fred Davis, Joanne Entwhistle, Valerie Steele, Freud and more. It is a college-level book, and a few sections may be a challenging read: the great thing is this doesn't matter. This is a book you can dip into, and take in as much as you can, from different authors at different times. As your understanding of fashion grows you will enjoy getting new things from familiar passages, and delving into some of the ones you found a bit perplexing earlier.

Beverley Milton-Edwards is Professor in the School of Politics, International Studies and Philosophy at Queens University Belfast. She is the author of Islamic Fundamentalism since 1945 (Routledge 2004) and Contemporary Politics in the Middle East (2006).

Biased and superficial

The photo on the front cover of this book, showing an Israeli soldier holding a gun, looking at a helpless Palestinian elderly woman while two more soldiers are in background, is a manifestation of its content: There are victims and victimizers in this conflict. Granted that no history book is objective, and this one is no exception. The author has a clear agenda, and a clear bias which is quite prevalent in Britain. The bias tends to be one-sided: Britain is increasingly pro-Palestinian and anti-Israeli.
This concise book of 228 pages sets out to tell the story of the conflict from its inception until Annapolis. Depth is not its strong side. The author takes broad, wide brushes and paints history in anything but refined texture. Often the reader is left puzzled observing the staggering discrepancy between the chapter headers and the little content aimed to cover the subject. The author is clearly very ambitious in her aims and quite sloppy in her methods.
Each chapter ends with recommendations for further readings. Many of them have the same clear bias. Arab authors as well as new historians, post and anti-Zionist authors are recommended and feature prominently throughout the text (for a more balanced discussion on Israel, of different Israeli authors and decision-makers, see my three edited volumes Cohen-Almagor 1999, 2005 and 2005; about the conflict, see Laqueur 2008 and Tessler 2009).
In conclusion, if you wish to have a concise, packed version of history that is written by a scholar whose sympathies and antipathies are clear and manifested, you may consider this one.

This book was required reading in a class a friend was taking. Looked like something that I wanted to know about so I found a used one on your site and was able to purchase it at an affordable price. It was "used" as it advertised, but served my purpose well. It was delivered on time and for a fair price and I am happy with it.

About the Author

Peter Smithson is former Senior Lecturer in the Department of Geography at the University of Sheffield. His research interests include: precipitation climatology (applications in UK, Sri Lanka and Brazil); cave climatology; and climate change, especially in semi-arid environments. He has over 50 publications, and over 40 refereed research papers in journals.

Ken Addison is Senior Lecturer at the School of Applied Sciences, University of Wolverhampton, and Fellow and Tutor in Physical Geography at St Peter's College, University of Oxford. His research interests include: Quaternary stratigraphy and geomorphology, with special interest in Wales; geotechnical and geomorphological studies of recent and contemporary slope stability; earth science conservation strategy and practice; and Medieval environmental change.

Ken Atkinson is former Senior Lecturer in Geography at the University of Leeds. His research interests include: soil science; ecosystems; and resource management. He has worked on environmental management in Canada for a number of years, and has co-organised six international conferences on Canadian resource management and planning.

Alastair Hannay is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at the University of Oslo. He has translated several of Kierkegaard's works, and is also the editor of the journal Inquiry.
