About the Author

Vojtech Mastny directs the Parallel History Project on NATO and the Warsaw Pact, based at the Center for Security Studies in Zurich and the National Security Archive in Washington. He was NATO’s first Manfred Wörner Fellow in 1996. He has been professor of history and international relations at Columbia University and the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies as well as professor of strategy at the U.S. Naval War College. His latest book, The Cold War and Soviet Insecurity: The Stalin Years, was the winner of the American Historical Association’s 1997 George L. Beer Prize.

Sven G. Holtsmark is professor at the Norwegian National Defence Educational Centre/Institute for Defence Studies (NDEC/IDS). He directs the Institute’s international programmes, and is currently Head of Studies at the NDEC. His has written on the history of Norwegian and Soviet foreign policy and of Nordic communism, including Soviet-Norwegian relations 1917-1995 (1995) and The diplomacy of the weak: GDR in Norway, 1949-73 (2000).

Andreas Wenger is professor of international security policy and director of the Center for Security Studies at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich. His latest publications include International Relations: From Cold War to the Globalized World (2003) and Living with Peril: Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Nuclear Weapons (1997).

Good Overview of Cold War Fantasies

Like all books consisting of essays, some are better than others. I found most interesting the chapter on Operation Buria, the Warsaw Pact war games conducted in anticipation of war breaking out over Berlin in 1961. Evidently Khrushchev was so discouraged by the relative ineptitude of inter-Bloc cooperation that he abandoned plans for WW3. I found that rather casual reference worthy of more elaboration but the essay's author didn't pursue it further. The level of fantasy both sides used to justify plans for initiating war would have embarrassed a hardcore Harry Potter fan. The Soviets simply ignored the real world likelihood that nuclear war would have catastrophically degraded their Pact allies abilities to launch major offensive operations and happily forecast reaching Calais in a cake walk. I did find the emphasis on the Scandinavian countries a bit boring but the essay on Denmark's highwire act between the US and USSR was revealing of just how prudent some nations were during the Cold War. A good addition to a Cold War fans library.

Sound Media includes a soundtrack CD with thirty-six examples from broadcasting and music recording in Europe and the USA, from Edith Piaf to Sarah Cox, and is richly illustrated with figures, timelines and technical drawings.

There results a theory of knowledge - an epistemology - which is systemic in both senses of the term: it belongs to the general systems movement, and it is systemically structured. The systems movement is thus offered a distinct epistemological voice which can compete on equal ground with other philosophical/epistemological positions. In true systemic fashion, this theory of knowledge also offers methodological, ethical, and existential implications.
The book provides:

a complete systems science epistemology built upon the idea of emergent property;
a developed system theoretical understanding of consciousness, hence contributing to studies of consciousness in general and, moreover, to the understanding of the manner in which human beings engage epistemologically with the world;
a detailed analysis of the relationship between emergent properties and the wholes which exhibit them;
an in-depth explication of the fundamental importance of the idea of emergent property to system science;
epistemological insights into some of the core ideas of systems science such as emergent property and boundary critique - indeed, the book's treatment of the former idea is unique in the system science literature and provides an advanced epistemological understanding of this idea;
a fresh, and distinctly epistemological, understanding of von Bertalanffy's pioneering general system theory - an understanding which has served to also demonstrate the continuing relevance of the original ideas behind the contemporary face of systems science, and the manner in which such ideas sit well with phenomenology;
a systemic understanding of two cornerstones of Husserlian phenomenology: intentionality and intuition;
an introduction, detailed treatment, and delimitation of the epistemological ideas of dogmatism and bounded rationality;
an original, epistemologically-focused critique of the idea of boundary analysis/boundary judgements;
an original, epistemological treatment of the idea of alienation, further demonstrated as permeating systems science and phenomenology; and,
an application for the development of organizational learning and knowledge management.

The Only Philosophy Textbook I'd Recommend

This book is an excellent introduction to contemporary metaphysics. Loux is a clear writer who sympathetically and systematically highlights the important debates in contemporary (and some historical) metaphysics. As Loux explains in the introduction, contemporary metaphysics covers a grab-bag of topics, including free will, time, causality, philosophy of mind, and the "realism" debates. Loux does his best to actually unite these different topics under the rubric of an Aristotelian study of metaphysics, which attempts to discover which things exist and where they fit in appropriate metaphysical categories. These categories are then connected by relations of ontological priority, in which some categories are primitive, and others are secondary. (Loux wisely refrains from assuming that other categories are derivative; they may supervene or be otherwise conceptually posterior without being analyzable into the more primitive categories.)

I generally have mixed (and mostly negative) feelings about the use of textbooks in philosophy. So much of philosophy is about actually critically engaging with primary sources, and it's difficult for textbooks to fairly present many sides of an issue. For instance, I have been very disappointed with Paul Guyer's Kant (The Routledge Philosophers), which is simply not the most charitable reading of Kant, and I find Chris Shield's Aristotle (The Routledge Philosophers) almost too programmatic - he rushes a discussion of the irreducibility of the final cause and then reduces every aspect of Aristotle's thought to this framework. I haven't had the opportunity to work with any textbooks in contemporary philosophy in-depth, but I've been disappointed in my brief interactions with them.

However, I think Loux really rises above Guyer and Shields, and the other contemporary books I've scanned (especially Lycan's Philosophy of Language: A Contemporary Introduction (Routledge Contemporary Introductions to Philosophy)). Why? It's tough to put a finger on it. Loux is just extraordinarily clear, and fairly presents both sides of issues, raising objections that are reasonable and well-researched. For example, his treatment of substance in chapter 3 does a great job of painting the debate as between the bundle theorist, who makes every property of a thing essential, the bare substratum theorist, who makes no property essential, and the Aristotelian, who tries to thread the needle. In a more specific case, I also particularly appreciated his explanation of the extremity of Quine's nominalism in "On What There Is", which I hadn't gotten out of the paper when reading it on my own.

As it stands, the book is missing an important debate in contemporary metaphysics. Contemporary metaphysicians have gotten interested in rejecting the Quinean belief that metaphysics is about what there is with the Aristotelian (and Kantian) assumption that metaphysics is about what grounds what. This both (a) lets us avoid thorny issues in the philosophy of language about the nature of a debate between someone who denies that X exists and someone who defends that X exists, and (b) allows for multiple simultaneous levels of dependence going in different directions, rather than the monad exists-doesn't exist relation. Of course, this is no fault of the book, since this has occurred in the past 3-4 years. Readers interested in this debate should check out Schaffer's "On What Grounds What" in Metametaphysics: New Essays on the Foundations of Ontology. Other big players in this field are Kit Fine and Ted Sider. There is a recent volume which I haven't gotten a chance to read (Metaphysical Grounding), which may be good.

My only real criticism of this book is that it over-simplifies some of the historical figures. Although Loux often points out that Aristotle's views are complex, he rarely cites the secondary literature (other than his own) which engages with them. For instance, in the section on Trope Theory, he points out that some of have found this view in Aristotle - but he doesn't actually point the reader to these authors! (The clearest defense is in Categories and De Interpretatione (Clarendon Aristotle), and also helpful is Moravcsik, "Aristotle on Predication", Phil Review 76.) As someone primarily interested in the history of philosophy, this was a bit annoying, but I don't think it would bother the primary audience of this book.

Also, please ignore Mr. Hickey's review below. He evidently has a personal bone to pick with Professor Loux, and is just using this as an attempt to promote his own ebook.

Excellent Introduction

Excellent introduction; I've yet to be dissatisfied with Routledge's Contemporary Introduction, a super readable work. I'd recommend it to anyone becoming interested in Metaphysics; it would be beneficial, I think, to get Blackwell's anthology on metaphysics, and reading the two in tandem should give you a good grasp of contemporary metaphysics.

My favorite introduction to metaphysics

My favorite introduction to metaphysics. Broadly realist and writing from an Aristotelian perspective, Loux introduces the reader to themes broadly discussed in general ontology. Metaphysics, he says, is the study of being qua being. What exists and characterizes them? Loux has nice discussions of universals, particulars, propositions, possible worlds, causation, time, and the challenge of anti-realism. While the discussions of each topic can get long and convoluted, Loux clearly writes about each topic and fairly represents the contrary views on each. Recommended.

The author explores the role legal and non-legal discourse plays in disciplining the brown body in pre- and post-Abolition colonial contexts, as well as how are other bodies and identities – e.g. black, white are discursively disciplined. Salih examines whether or not it’s possible to say that non-legal texts such as prose fictions are engaged in this kind of discursive disciplining, and more broadly, looks at what contemporary formulations of "mixed" identity owe to these legal or non-legal discursive formations. This study demonstrates the striking connections between historical and contemporary discourses of race and brownness and argues for a shift in the ways we think about, represent and discuss "mixed race" people.

Nigel Thrift, Professor at the University of Warwick, is also Visiting Professor at the University of Oxford and an Emeritus Professor at the University of Bristol. He has authored, co-authored and co-edited more than 35 books and over 200 journal articles. Non-Representational Theory Redux

This book is the culmination of multifarious studies on political space, time, and affect (not only Thrift but a host of others). The monograph represents a synthesis woven around political theory and space. I don't really want to go into explanations of the analyses contained therein. Instead, I'd like to address the previous reviewer's fascinating comments:
1. Thrift is 59 years old, making him one of the youngest forerunners of the collective "non-representational theory" designation. Most of the "theory" texts presently taught in social sciences/humanities departments everywhere were written by more senior scholars (many unfortunately deceased). Application usually lags behind "theory" by one or two decades.
2. Pierre Bourdieu? Aside from methodology (a big aside, I know), Thrift's work owes more to Merleau-Ponty (Phenomenology of Perception), Foucault, Deleuze, and Serres than Bourdieu. More importantly, this book reflects the influence of Kathleen Stewart more than anyone else...and that is not "old." In fact, that's just about as "new" as one can get. Also a touch of Wolin, eh?
3. The "new age" and "self-help" categories seem to lack concrete definitions in the above review--which engendered skepticism on my part. "Get in touch with nature by meditation?" If the reviewer is writing about affect, then said reviewer should read more on space and perceptions--I'm not sure if perception and behavior is "get in touch with nature by meditation." If not affect, I would venture to guess that the reviewer confused "new age" with the equally vague "postmodern" or "poststructuralist" and "self-help" with "theory for political actors and systems." "New age" is usually associated with spiritual revivalism in music, theology, dance, etc. I do not think any rational human being would classify this work as "new age." If the reviewer meant poststructuralism, the affective turn attempts to transcend the there-is-no-outside-text debate. He or she needs to read more on affect, and then review the book. By the way--why are people tagging "There Will Be Blood" and the new Coen brothers film as "new age"?
4. As for Martin Lindstrom (not exactly the most cited source in the text), the man is COO of British Telecom and the founder of two of the most profitable internet solution companies in the world. Also, the reviewer borrowed the "guru" title from the Chartered Institute of Marketing annoucement. In that context, he's a Fortune 100 entrepeneur and hence "guru" means leader with zealous advocates. What's really fascinating is that the reviewer completely ignores the fact that Thrift provides an analytical framework for facilitating democratic politics in mercantile and industrial capitalist systems. Thus Lindstrom isn't exactly a hero here.
5. Affect attempts to transcend the linguistic turn by incorporating neuroscience and biology into analyses of social interactions, culture, and economy. That is, the study of human social behavior as affected by other human beings, communication, physical constructs, and the environment. Read at least the intro to this book--Nigel Thrift offers a summary. A more cogent critique of space-politics-affect would concentrate on affect and physical science (especially the success or failure of the physical/social science convergence). THAT'S something I'd like to see.
6. If this book is "self-help," then booksellers everywhere should reclassify their history, political science, sociology, and economy sections as "self-help." Most if not all social sciences (and physical sciences) seek to better the present human condition in some manner, regardless of a focus on the present or the past.

I happened upon this review after reading Thrift's book. I've never reviewed anything for Amazon before. I read the initial comments and--quite frankly--grew amazed at the complexity of the arguments. This person demonstrates logical reasoning skills as well as how to obscure key critical signifiers. For example, the "guru" citation (implied as spiritual rather than socioeconomic) provided evidence for the "new age" contention. Either the reviewer inductively constructed his or her arguments from the Lindstrom announcement or deductively searched for a source/tangential evidence that justified his or her position. The signifiers also denote humor/sarcasm which divert attention away from the constitutive mutuality of the assertions. In addition, praise of Thrift's previous work ensures that readers focus on the book (and anyone's positive appraisals thereof) rather than Nigel Thrift. This person obviously knows the power of Amazon, so I'm guessing a younger scholar aiming to diminish Amazon sales or to undermine positive appraisals for whatever motivations. In other words, his or her comments piqued my interest. Fascinating!!!
