Once upon a Kant

One term ago "The Routledge Companion to Nineteenth Century Philosophy" (TRCTNCP) was appointed our textbook. Because of my lack of in-depth knowledge of philosophy from that period I feel I am not the most suitable person to review the Companion, even though I have passed the exam. On the other hand I do understand the difference between "introductions" and "companions", and I am not going to accuse TRCTNCP of not fulfilling goals that it never intended to fulfil in the first place. In fact I learned a lot about nineteenth century philosophy from this book, and it obviously has the potential to serve as an introduction if one is willing to invest their time (the reading of this 900-pages long beast took me around 120 hours, including making quite extended notes on the margins) and to supplement it with other sources. However, the Companion could be even better. In the following I want to pinpoint its lacks, to give my praise to the chapters that deserve it, and to warn against those that are rather badly written.
TRCTNCP opens with an elegant introductory essay written by Dean Moyar who singles out six Kantian themes that are central to the 19th century philosophy. Too bad that the following chapters written by diverse authors never explicitly refer to these themes. This is a good example of the first structural drawback of the Companion: the essays do not enter into any dialogue with each other and I did not notice any cross-references whatsoever, even in the places where they would be most natural as in the two neighbouring chapters on John Stuart Mill. Thus TRCTNCP stays at the level of anthology instead of aiming at being a synthetic whole (with one exception to be described in the following paragraph). The impression is further reinforced by the fact that the seven parts of the Companion are not equipped with their own (short) introductions or summaries. Such pieces would at a very low cost achieve two things: they would bring the essays closer together, and they would make the Companion more friendly to the uninitiated. Without them the seven-parts division remains merely architectonic.
The aforementioned "synthetic" exception is the first part dedicated to German Idealism. Here, instead of getting separate chapters on Fichte, Schelling and Hegel, we find partially overlapping essays that examine different branches of the idealist movement. The approach works well, but unfortunately Hegel becomes its victim. It is very ironic that the giant of the 19th century philosophy did not get a solid chapter on him alone; the presentation of Hegel's system is dismembered and incomplete insofar his ontology is not discussed. The treatments of both Kant and Fichte are much more satisfactory. In fact, the discussion of Kant's philosophy, although very informative and full of interesting comments, takes way too much place (to the point of being redundant) which is unfair for the other philosophers since Kant does not belong to the title period.
The synthetic approach is given up from the second part onwards. Amazon gives us access to the book's contents and as you can see for yourself most of the remaining essays are dedicated to a single thinker or to a group of philosophers (e.g. Hegelians, Romantics or Neo-Kantians). In my opinion the best pieces in the Companion are the ones on Karl Marx and Darwin's philosophical impact -- they are well-structured, clearly written and rich in riveting remarks. I liked also articles on Schopenhauer, James and Brentano very much.
On the other end of the quality spectrum we find the unfortunate essay on Bergson which is rather impenetrable, full of clumsy phrases and in need of a serious editorial intervention. I found pieces on the moral theory of German Idealism and on practical philosophy of British Idealism hard to follow. The first half of the chapter on Dilthey and the Neo-Kantians is considerably more obscure than the second half, the gap being explained by the dual authorship of the text. The essay on C. S. Peirce is too wordy for my taste, and I think that the closing chapter on Husserl is for two reasons an unfortunate ending to the Companion: it is hopelessly technical and inaccessible, and it seems that the author, Christian Beyer, made the task of writing simple for himself and borrowed large parts of his old entry on Husserl from the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy.
(Of course, every time I claim that some essay from TRCTNCP is "hard to follow", one could blame my lack of prerequisite knowledge. Fair enough -- but let us keep in mind that I have learned a lot from other chapters even though I often lacked prior knowledge on their topics as well.)
Some relevant philosophical subjects are altogether absent from the Companion. The omissions are at least honestly named by the editor in the very beginning of the Introduction. Thus in TRCTNCP we will find no mention of French spiritualism, of Russian philosophy, and of American transcendentalism. The nineteenth century philosophy is obviously too large to be crammed into a single volume... or is it? I think it is justified to ask whether the content could not be organized differently, and some room made for the missing topics. Why did Kant get so many pages? Could not the two chapters on Mill be compressed into a single article? Is Tocqueville really that important to the nineteenth century philosophical thought? How much philosophy proper, as opposed to history of anthropology, is there in Chapter 17? And does not the following piece on psychology and philosophy belong rather to a companion on a history of psychology? It looks to me that about 100 pages could be filled with more relevant content.
All in all, I would give the Companion my whole-hearted recommendation, were it not for its painful price. A potential reader must now ask himself what he needs TRCTNCP for. If you want to learn about philosophy of the 19th century, I believe there are easier and cheaper ways to do that (start with the aforementioned Stanford Encyclopedia). However, if you wish to grab a collection of valuable albeit demanding essays about the period -- and if you can tolerate the handful of the less successful ones -- then the Companion will be a fine addition to your library, its high price notwithstanding.
