About the Author

Barbara Ozieblo teaches American Literature at the University of Málaga, Spain. She is the author of Susan Glaspell: A Critical Biography, editor of The Provincetown Players: A Choice of the Shorter Plays and co-editor of Disclosing Intertextualities: The Stories, Plays, and Novels of Susan Glaspell. She is co-founder and President of the Susan Glaspell Society.

Jerry Dickey is Associate Professor of Theatre Arts at the University of Arizona. He is the author of Sophie Treadwell: a Research and Production Sourcebook and co-editor of Broadway’s Bravest Woman: Selected Writings of Sophie Treadwell. His essays on Treadwell have appeared in A Companion to Twentieth-Century American Drama and the Cambridge Companion to American Women Playwrights.

Strongly recommended for therapists working with depressed children and adolescents.

I purchased this book after I once again started working with children and adolescents many of whom suffer from depressive symptoms such as aggressive behavior, withdrawal from family and peers and declining school performance. I have been a Masters level social worker for over 30 years, licensed in several states for over 25. Currently I am employed in a private group practice where cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the treatment of choice. I found this resource to be excellent in learning to apply CBT to work with depressed children and adolescents.

This book is very clearly presented using case examples to illustrate when necessary. It includes chapters on Depression in Adolescence, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy: An Introduction and Overview, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Assessment and Formulation, Starting Therapy, Early Stages of Therapy, Cognitive Techniues, General Cognitve Behavioural Techniues, Ending Therapy, Working with the Wider System, Special Issues: Bullying, Bereavement, Trauma and Suicidality and Common Problems. My favorite part of this book. however, is the Material and Worksheet sections where the authors most effectively summarize CBT principles session by session. Most of these have subsections on Aims, Tasks, Techniues, Home Practice and Summary of Therapy. In addition, what is extremely useful fot the clinician to distribute to their clients are what are called "Young person's fact sheets". These are handouts which can be copied from the book and given to the child or adolescent as appropriate. Topics include a fact sheet on What is Depression? and Main Features of Depression in Teenagers, one explaining What is CBT?, one on Negative Automatic Thoughts (NATs), one on Thinking Errors and one on Problem Solving.

I think this is an excellent resource which has the potential of being extremely useful to both the novice clinician as well as the experienced therapist alike. I strongly agree with what Alan Carr, Professor of Clinical Psychology, University College, Dublin, Ireland, wrote when he stated: "These authoritative, yet practical books will be of interest to all professionals who work in the field of child and adolescent mental health."

About the Author

The authors are all faculty members of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Adelaide. Graeme Dandy and Robert Warner are Professors who together established the first year engineering course at the University of Adelaide in 1983 on which this book is based. Trevor Daniell is a hydrologist and water engineer and David Walker is a hands-on engineer who teaches design.

About the Author
Brian Levack grew up in a family of teachers in the New York metropolitan area. From his father, a professor of French history, he acquired a love for studying the past, and he knew from an early age that he too would become a historian. He received his B.A. from Fordham University in 1965 and his Ph.D. from Yale in 1970. In graduate school he became fascinated by the history of the law and the interaction between law and politics, interests that he has maintained throughout his career. In 1969 he joined the History Department of the University of Texas at Austin, where he is now the John Green Regents Professor in History. The winner of several teaching awards, Levack teaches a wide variety of courses on British and European history, legal history, and the history of witchcraft. For eight years he served as the chair of his department, a rewarding but challenging assignment that made it difficult for him to devote as much time as he wished to his teaching and scholarship. His books include "The Civil Lawyers in England, 1603-1641: A Political Study (1973), The Formation of the British State: England, Scotland and the Union, 1603-1707 (1987)," and "The Witch-Hunt in Early Modern Europe (1987 and 1995)," which has been translated into eight languages.

His study of the development of beliefs about witchcraft in Europe over the course of many centuries gave him the idea of writing a textbook on Western civilization that would illustrate a broader set of encounters between different cultures, societies, and ideologies. While writing the book, Levack and his two sons built a house on property that he and his wife, Nancy, own in the Texas hill country. He found that the two projectspresented similar challenges: it was easy to draw up the design, but far more difficult to execute it. When not teaching, writing, or doing carpentry work, Levack runs along the jogging trails of Austin, and he has recently discovered the pleasures of scuba diving.

About the Author

Alicia Sanchez-Mazas is Professor of Population Genetics at the University of Geneva, where she chairs the Department of Anthropology. Her main interest is the study of human genetic diversity and evolution. She has published many book chapters and papers, and co-edited The Peopling of East Asia (2005).

Roger Blench is the Managing Director of a Consultancy and Research company, Mallam Dendo Ltd, specialising in development anthropology, especially pastoralism. He has long-term research interests in the interface of archaeology and linguistics and has co-edited diverse volumes, including Language, Archaeology, and the African past (2006).

Malcolm Ross is Professor of Linguistics at the Australian National University and co-director of the Oceanic Lexicon Project. His interests include the histories of Austronesian and Papuan languages. He was a co-author of The Oceanic Languages (2002) and has published many articles on these topics.

Ilia Peiros is Visiting Professor of Santa Fe Institute, USA. His main interest is the comparative linguistics of East and Southeast Asia. He has published several books and numerous articles. His current activity is to compile electronic etymological data-bases for Evolution of Human Languages project.

Marie Lin is the Director of the Transfusion Medicine and Anthropology Research laboratory at the Taipei Mackay Memorial Hospital and a professor at the Institute of Forensic Medicine of National Taiwan University. She has published on blood groups, HLA, mtDNA and theY-chromosome in Taiwanese aboriginal populations.

About the Author

Kecia Ali is the author of Sexual Ethics and Islam: Feminist Reflections on Qur'an, Hadith, and Jurisprudence (2006). She is currently Assistant Professor of Religion at Boston University. She previously held research and teaching fellowships at Brandeis University and Harvard Divinity School.

Oliver Leaman teaches at the University of Kentucky and writes mainly on Islamic thought. His most recent relevant publication is his edited volume, The Qur'an: an Encyclopedia (Routledge, 2005).

Dictionary of Islamic terms and concepts

This is essentially a dictionary of Islamic terms and concepts. Very handy for anyone who wants to take a serious look at Islam. Given the current state of the world I think we all should become students of the many facets of Islam. This is a good place to start.

a good reference

"Islam: The Key Concepts" is like a mini-Wikipedia about Islam except that it is written by two actual scholars rather than random people. It is comprised of 123 entries about concepts ranging from practices (salat, zakat, jihad, haram), to beliefs (tawhid, paradise, hell) and Qur'anic themes, to theological, legal debates and intellectual currents, etc. Every entry ends with suggestions of other related concepts to look up.

It is probably not an ideal start for someone who wants to learn about Islam. A book with a continuous narrative might prove more useful as it would provide a general picture of the religion. However, this book is great for someone who already has a grip of the basics and wants to learn more about the details. The authors emphasize the heterogeneous nature of the religion by covering a lot of disagreements between different Islamic thinkers. The authors also suggest looking up referenced passages in the Qur'an while reading. I simply read this text from cover to cover and still learned a lot and found it enjoyable.
