States of Knowledge: The Co-production of Science and the Social Order (International Library of Sociology)From Routledge

In the past twenty years, the field of science and technology studies (S&TS) has made considerable progress toward illuminating the relationship between scientific knowledge and political power. These insights are now ready to be synthesized and presented in forms that systematically highlight the connections between S&TS and other social sciences.

This timely collection of essays by leading scholars in the field meets this challenge. The book develops the theme of 'co-production', showing how scientific knowledge both embeds and is embedded in social identities, institutions, representations and discourses. Accordingly, the authors argue, ways of knowing the world are inseparably linked to the ways in which people seek to organize and control it. Through studies of emerging knowledges, research practices and political institutions, the authors demonstrate that the idiom of co-production importantly extends the vocabulary of the traditional social sciences, offering fresh analytic perspectives on the nexus of science, power and culture.

Great Content - Once you get Past Chapter 1
By Lisa Shea
States of Knowledge: The Co-production of Science and the Social Order is a collection of essays edited and organized by Sheila Jasanoff. Sheila herself only writes the first two introductory pieces and then the final summary. This is key to realize because Sheila's wording is EXTREMELY convoluted. If you felt the entire book was going to be like this, you might give up in despair.

Sheila is fond of phrases such as:

"Some of the chapters in this volume address this problematic."

"And how thoroughgoing anyway is the unpredictability of mangling?"

It is as if she found a thesaurus and tried to figure out the most polysyllabic words she could stuff into a given sentence.

In addition, she will use examples in her essays which seem iffy - and then if you read her footer notes you find that even SHE finds them iffy. Why include them then? Why not include other examples which do not have these issues? She also makes statements - and as a reference for them she refers to her OWN content elsewhere - which is currently unpublished! So not only is she quoting herself, but she's quoting her own material that you can't go and read. Very curious.

But again, you just have to get past these introductory areas to move on to some incredibly interesting material. There are essays on how the ivory trade affected the governments in Africa. You learn about genetic modification of food in Europe. There are essays on climate change and on genetic research. I found the insights to be fascinating both on a theoretical "debate" kind of level as well as on a real world, 'how do we cope with these issues' level as well.

I recommend the book. It would be nice if the intro was not as off-putting, to help insure students did not choke and change their minds about a class before they got into the meat of the book.

From Library Journal
Smart (The World's Religions, LJ 11/1/98) presents a narrative history arranged geographically. After an introductory outline chapter, the concepts that arose on the ancient subcontinent of India, in Chinese antiquity, and so on, are developed culture by culture and epoch by epoch. Smart weaves an explanation of religious developments among Hindus, Buddhists, Jews, Muslims, and Christians into nearly as thorough a tapestry as his presentation of secular thought. This seems wholly appropriate, given how religious ideas traditionally suffuse philosophical ones, but, in many cases, the author's interest in religious nuance downplays the distinction between religion and philosophy. Most troubling in this large and academic text is the complete lack of quotation and, too often, the absence of particular vocabulary developed by the philosophers and movements under discussion. The exhaustive chapter-by-chapter bibliographies range widely to include reference works, primary sources, and popular works. For academic collections.?Francisca Goldsmith, Berkeley P.L., CA

Review

'As a work of reference, this will be invaluable.  Smart's analysis of such crucial thinkers as Buddha, Confucius, Descartes and Derrida is imprecccable.'

Karen Armstrong, The Times

'In a work of amazing breadth and cogency, the acknowledged master of the study of world civilization leads us through the philosophies that have guided some corners of humanity and today lay claim to a hearing everywhere...This is a masterpiece of lucid description, analusis and interpretation.'

Jacob Neusner

'Imagine... all the philosophies of the world in a single book...it can stimulate our interest in aspects of philosohy which may be new to us, motivating us to be more open-minded...and to rethink our own worldviews.'

The ideal coffee-table book for philosophers
By K. T. Ong
Unlike so many meretricious books which purport to be about philosophy but are actually limited to Western philosophy, Smart's book really takes on the philosophical traditions of well nigh the entire human race. It is incredible how any single scholar's mind could be so encyclopedic. From antiquity down to the present day, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Islamic and even African philosophy are covered side by side with Western thought (which is subdivided into its Greek/Roman, European and North American camps), with no partiality being shown towards any tradition. Even 20th-century developments of the non-Western traditions are discussed. Due to the vast scope of this 454-page book, though, individual philosophers are necessarily and somewhat regrettably given only brief treatment (about one-and-a-half pages per thinker on average), the focus being on the larger picture of the development of ideas and of cultures. Still, it would probably be too much to ask for more from a single author, besides which as a compensation hardly a single important philosopher from any tradition has been left out (except Asanga and Vasubandhu from the Buddhist tradition) -- even the less well-known thinkers such as Feuerbach, Merleau-Ponty and Nishida Kitaro are included. (If only two or more authors could co-author this book, so that more could be written about each thinker.) Smart is always fair and sympathetic towards the different traditions as well: you don't find his language changing from cold, dry academic analysis when discussing, say, Africa, to glowing adulation and praise when looking at, say, the ancient Greeks (who else). And if the book appears to have strong religious leanings, hey, what do you expect, a lot of philosophy was and still is tied in to religious concerns. A small number of typographical errors can be found scattered throughout the book, and Smart also seemed to have some trouble with the proper Pinyin romanization of Chinese names and terms, but on the whole these faults are negligible. So all things said, if you simply want to wallow in the enormous wealth of human thought (and not just Western thought, please, for heaven's sake), this is the book.

Correcting last reviewer
By A Philosopher
I originally dismissed this book because of what the last reviewer had mentioned-- specifically that the author "mentions God twenty times per page." However, after examining this book at the local bookshop, I found this to be completely false. Smart gives a very sharp, though concise, rendering of the key concepts, ideas, and history of the world's rich philosophical traditions. In addition to Asian philosophies and Western philosophies, African and Latin American are also considered. While this book does suffer from lack of depth, it provides a rare source for the basic framework of most philosophical systems-- ancient, classical, and contemporary.

A delightful read
By Sreenivas K
"Philosophy" has suffered from a Western-only myopia and this delightful read is impressive for its breadth. Under one cover the quintessence of every significant philosophical development, both "Western" and "Eastern" is presented. A must read for further study. The paperback ... is very good value.

Review
'A thoughtful overview and introduction to the range of methods and traditions of Buddhist meditation across Asia, from mindfulness of breathing to visualisation, koan and chanting practices. A particular strength is that it shows how meditative qualities are extended into daily life through devotional, ritual and artistic practices, which then in turn give nurturing roots for more archetypally meditative practices.' – Peter Harvey, University of Sunderland, UK, and editor of the Buddhist Studies Review journal.

Sarah Shaw teaches for the Oxford University Department for Continuing Education and practises with the Samatha Association of Britain. She is the translator of Buddhist Meditation: An Anthology of Texts from the Pali Canon (Routledge 2006).

very nice as one of the few books to give a more academic treatment and overarching look at the great variety of meditation practices within Buddhisms around the world. Sometimes it seems to border on an academic book that wants to be a more popular book or vice versa. I felt there was some lack in consistency in the voice and intended audience of the book, thus keeping it from 5 stars. There are also some questionable points and generalizations, but that is very forgivable in a book that tries to cover so much ground. A very solid addition to an area which is not treated enough with an academic lens ... but, fyi, if you are simply looking to start a meditation practice, probably not the right book for you.

The Special Theory of Relativity (Routledge Classics), by David Bohm

In these inspiring lectures David Bohm explores Albert Einstein’s celebrated Theory of Relativity that transformed forever the way we think about time and space. Yet for Bohm the implications of the theory were far more revolutionary both in scope and impact even than this. Stepping back from dense theoretical and scientific detail in this eye-opening work, Bohm describes how the notion of relativity strikes at the heart of our very conception of the universe, regardless of whether we are physicists or philosophers.

Review

'Bohm presents a highly original view of what it means to look at the world with new eyes.' – Journal of Consciousness Studies

About the Author

David Bohm (1917–1992). A close colleague of Einstein’s at Princeton University after World War II, Bohm would himself go on to become one of the great physicists of the twentieth century. Persecuted for his radical politics during the era of the McCarthy hearings, he left the US in 1952 to teach first in Brazil and then in the UK.

Lorentz Electrodynamics, Special Relativity, and our Perception of Reality
By Thomas Wikman
This book is a thorough and well written introduction to the “Special Theory of Relativity”. In addition to the basics of special relativity it covers the history of Special Relativity and it includes 60-pages of Lorentz Electrodynamics. The book also discusses Minkowski Diagrams, the Twin Paradox, relativistic Doppler effects, K-Calculus, and philosophy related to relativity. The book does not discuss General Relativity.

Bohm does not derive many formulas for electrodynamics, optics, quantum physics, thermodynamics, etc, and therefore this book does not resemble a text book. Bohm's focus is on a deeper understanding of the special theory of relativity itself, and on time and space. He discusses perception of reality and includes discussions on child development, psychology and neurology related to perception, the meaning of the relational concepts in relativity, the structure of scientific revolutions (T.S. Kuhn), our perceptions of time and space, philosophy, and other related topics that cannot be classified as physics.

In K Calculus you draw the world lines of light pulses sent at constant intervals between different observers. Then you calculate what is essentially the Doppler factor K and uses it to explain what is going in relativity. In contrast the Lorentz transform is concerned with the space-time coordinates that you measure after taking into account that light have to travel a certain distance and that this takes time. Basically, the "actual time and space coordinates". K Calculus on the other hand is including both relativistic effects and the distance and time it takes for light to travel. K Calculus is thus not what you "measure" but what you "observe". K Calculus makes it very easy to explain special relativity to an audience that is not strong in math and it also adds a new understanding to the special theory of relativity. However, I see an inherent risk with K-Calculus in that it can end up fooling the student into believing that he understands relativity, for example, if a student incorrectly comes to believe that time dilation is some form of Doppler Effect.

Except for the fact that some of the mathematical derivations were unnecessarily complex I thought this book presented relativity lucidly, the philosophical discussions were insightful, and it added to my understanding of the topic. It should probably not be your first book on Special Relativity but it is a very good second book. I highly recommend it for those who want to think through the concepts of relativity a little deeper.

Here, David Bohm, one of Einstein's last students, brings to our attention in his usual clear, thorough and exciting way, just how revolutionary and counter-intuitive the ideas that underlie the Special Theory of Relativity really were, and still are, and indeed how different they are from the standard model of physics. In order to fully appreciate the radical nature of the changes needed to make the transition, from the "Standard Model" to "Relativistic Physics," he includes a complete appendix from which he draws most of his conceptual (i.e. Psychological and Philosophical) insights. Rather surprisingly they were taken mostly from the works of none other than the famous Swiss Child Psychologist Jean Piaget, which at the time the book was written in 1967, were quite revolutionary themselves. Judging by this rather astoundingly clear appendix alone, called "Physics and Perceptions," in which Bohm lays out a deep conceptual framework upon which the book is hung, one could argue that Professor Bohm is at least as proficient a social scientist and analytical psychologist as he is a Physicist.

Because of its centrality to the book, my advice to the reader is to read the appendix first, or at least at a very early stage of the book, because it is there that the substance of the book takes shape and form. The physics concepts are almost incidental to this underlying conceptual theme.

That said, it must be pointed out that this then is a wholly conceptual, rather than a mathematical book on the Special Theory. No mathematics are needed and none are used. In many ways it parallels Amos Harpaz's equally excellent conceptual book, called "Relativity Theory: Concepts and Basic Principles," which attempts to do the same thing for the General Theory, except in Harpaz's case (written almost 30 years later), even to explain the concepts of GT required, as a minimum, the Tensor Calculus.

The beauty of the present volume is that even though we have heard it all before and thought we fully understood the conceptual basis of the Special Theory, and all the many nuances of the Michelson-Morley experiments with the ether, Lorentz transforms, Maxwell equations, to Minkowski's geometry, and on to the tricky aspects of reformulating space-time itself, it all has a fresh (not a historical) resonance in Bohm's skilful hands.

And as always, here again, as he has done in his other writings especially those since, on "The Implicate Order," for instance, there is something novel to learn and understand with each new recounting by Bohm. It is not just the way the concepts are applied to physics alone that matters in Bohm's recounting, but also how they are used in other contexts, in the arts for instance, or to modern applied physics and engineering technology, and how Relativity has become a metaphor of our culture, more generally.

Bohm's explanations are so clear and so carefully laid out that there is no margin of error for misunderstanding. For that alone and the historical value of the book itself (it may even be clearer than Einstein's own popular book on STR) earns five stars.

4.5*, Good, but not quite 5 stars
By Metallurgist
If fractional stars could be awarded I would give this book 4.5 stars. I liked it but in my opinion was not quite a 5 star book. Being unable to give it 4.5 stars I am giving it the benefit of the doubt and going with 5 stars, but with some reservations, discussed below.

I really liked the first three-quarters of the book. Professor Bohm writes with clarity, giving more than just derivations of basic equations (which he does with some rigor), but also provides a very clear exposition of why things are what the theory says they are. He provides not only the standard treatment of relativity, but also provides details about the ether theory, Lorentz' attempt to save it in the face of contradictory experimental evidence and the behavior of charged particles in electromagnetic fields - the last item a subject that is generally not covered in a basic treatment of relativity theory. In terms of difficulty, I would rate the book as being much more difficult than Gardner's "Relativity Simply Explained" or Wolfson's "Simply Einstein", but less difficult than an intermediate college text. It is suitable for someone wishing to learn the subject on their own, but only if they have some physics background and are willing to deal with some basic algebra and a little first year college math. It is also very useful for someone studying this subject in college, as Professor Bohm's explanations of the nature of relativity theory are very good, making this an excellent adjunct to a standard college text.

Unfortunately, I found the last quarter of the text a bit less clear than the first three-quarters. This latter quarter deals with the Minkowski Diagram, K calculus and applications of these subjects. Many basic books cover Minkowski's space-time approach, but few cover K calculus, for good reason. I found these discussions rushed and far from clear. Also, the text covering several of the figures contain reference to letter denoted items that are not on the figure, making it very difficult to follow what Bohm is trying to get across. As noted by other reviewers, there were some typographical errors (mostly leaving out prime superscripts and alike) that needlessly confused things. I had the feeling that if another 50 pages had been allotted to the latter half of the book it would have been greatly improved.

There is a 60-page appendix that discusses Physics and Perception. Professor Bohm obviously was greatly influenced by the work of Piaget and other physiologists and used this to try to explain how we learn to interpret the world, how this defines our concept of it, and why this makes the basic concepts of Special Relativity are so difficult to accept. While very useful and informative, this is an area where I think that less would have definitely been more. A brief 10-page summary would been, for me, clearer, more focused, and would therefore have had more impact.

All in all, I liked this book and would recommend it to someone who is really interested in Relativity Theory, but if all you want is a basic primer on what the subject is about, without somewhat rigorous mathematical derivations, then this would not be the best choice for you.

Good introduction
By Amazon Customer
Good introduction to literary theory. I am pleased with the depth and breadth of coverage. The "readability" of the book is fine as well; theory has the potential to be some REALLY dry stuff, but Bertens makes it palatable without watering it down any more than necessary. I gave it four stars only because I reserve five stars for items that really knock my socks off. "Basics" was good and well worth the rather low price.

Not for Beginners
By Drew
Hans Bertens' comprehensive analysis of the core literary theories is a good tool for those who are already familiar with the methods and issues involving poststructuralism, New Criticism, Marxism, etc. and would like more of an advanced philosophical analysis of the schools of criticism. But if you are new to the subject, I would suggest finding an easier read. Throughout the his analyses, Bertens' text is vague to a considerable degree and he has a habit of jumping all over the place. This may produce more difficulty for those who are new to this area of literature and who need a concrete, upfront foundation in the various theoretical methods. To make matters worse, the text was written with the European/British student in mind, so the language may be more difficult to grasp.

Clear, concise, and insightful
By Q
This is absolutely the best introduction to modern literary theory, and I have read them all! He introduces the theories in an historical narrative, explaining how and why they arose. He discusses the major figures in theory, and includes a valuable guide to further reading. His explanations of the abstruse and arcane world of literary theory are models of clarity and conciseness. I teach an introductory class on literary theory, and this is the book I use, chosen after carefully reviewing all available options.
