About the Author

Evanthis Hatzivassiliou received his Ph.D. in International History from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 1992. He is associate professor of Contemporary History at the Department of History, University of Athens. He is the editor of the ‘Modern and Contemporary History’ series of Patakis Publications (Athens), a member of the Greek-Turkish Forum, and member of the Consultative Committee of the Foundation for Parliamentarianism and Democracy of the Greek Parliament. He has published six books.

Joseph Soeters is a professor in organization studies at the Netherlands Defense Academy and Tilburg University. His research focuses on issues related to international military cooperation, intercultural and diversity management, inter-organizational relations and networking.

Jan van der Meulen is an associate professor at the Netherlands Defense Academy. As a sociologist of civil-military relations he has published on recruitment, public opinion and the support for risky missions. About the Author

Alex P. Schmid is a Vsiting Research Fellow at the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT) in The Hague, The Netherlands. He is also Editor of TRI's online journal Perspectives on Terrorism. He was Director of the Terrorism Research Initiative (TRI), an international network of scholars who seek to enhance human security through collaborative research, Director of the Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence (CSTPV) at the University of St Andrews, UK, where he held a chair in International Relations and, until 2005, Officer-in-Charge of the Terrorism Prevention Branch at the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Vienna. Currently he is Fellow-in-Residence at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIAS).

Alex Schmid, Director of the Terrorism Research Intitiative (TRI) and long a distinguished voice in terrorism studies has created an extraordinary reference work for students and researchers of terrorism, political violence and security studies that surpasses all his previous and already prodigious efforts in this vein. It gives the most extensive discussion of defining terrorism that I've ever seen and also introduces the various terrorism databases available today. The reader can also find a listing of the terrorist groups by country as well as an amazing synthesis of the existing theories of terrorism, radicalization and political violence. This handbook is an absolutely essential reference guide for the researcher and student of terrorism studies. It is both comprehensive and well written, making it both invaluable and a clear read for the serious study of terrorism theories, actors and groups. I highly recommend it as a textbook for terrorism studies classes, and as an essential reference guide for military, policy makers, researchers, diplomats and political leaders. It is a truly magnificent work and well worth the price! I highly recommend this book!

If you are involved in the field - you NEED this publication within easy reach .... the document covers nearly anything you might want to know .... this is a follow-up/updated version of the "tour-de-force" that preceded this version and it does not disappoint nor let up on keeping up the quality of material presented. As an independent researcher on the topic, I rely on it to provide in-depth presentation and that informed starting point to move to the specific details that I might be pursuing. It has never disappointed in the material provided - do I always agree with what is presented - well, of course not - but I can't argue with the caliber of thought and integrity of the material. This is professional research material you absolutely need in your reference library - just make sure it's close by, you will find yourself marking it up and using lots of sticky notes to keep sections handy to locate in the future.

This book needs to be more rigorous to become a scientific book. It lacks depth, and the author makes some ambiguous statements in the book. Sometimes, premature claims are also made on subjects that are currently under investigation and subjected to debate. This can be seriously misleading in certain cases. In addition, the author could have done a better job referencing.

About the Author
Ingvild Saelid Gilhus is Professor of History of Religions at the University of Bergen, Norway. She is the author of Laughing Gods, Weeping Virgins (Routledge, 1997), and numerous articles about Gnosticism and the History of Religions.
