A very helpful introduction

This book presents wonderfully concise summaries of a great many of the doctrinal issues and personalities that played a part in the development of the Church in the fourth century. Johannes Roldanus looks not only at individuals and doctrines, but at the whole conception of the proper role of Church and Emperor in the early years of Christianity as a legal religion in the Roman Empire.

Roldanus eschews such simplistic thinking as, "The emperors were purely political and the churchmen purely theological." He looks, rather, at the mixture of piety and political concerns in all parties. The author approaches his topic in terms of "contextuality" and "contextualisation" (yes, he uses British spelling). This point of view seeks to understand how the Church adapted itself to its circumstances in the Roman Empire both before and after it was legalized. The results are enlightening.

After reading this glowing praise of the book, you might wonder why I have given it four stars instead of five. Very simply, it is because the publisher utterly failed to serve this author and his audience by having his book edited by a competent native speaker of English. Roldanus acknowledges the aid of a certain professor "in improving my imperfect English." Even so, every page is full of awkward wording and poor grammar. Occasionally it seems certain that the wrong word has been used, since it makes no sense in context and actually appears to go against the overall sense of the text. Sadly, Routledge is not alone among academic presses in failing to employ good editors--or any editors at all, it would seem. A hundred years ago academic presses employed excellent editors and prided themselves on the quality of their books. In recent years, though, I have seen examples from one academic press after another of unedited works. The presses just trust the authors to submit adequately edited texts. Most scholars, though, no matter how expert they are in their fields, are not good editors. This is all the more so when they are working in a second or third language. I can only hope that these publishers will be sufficiently embarrassed by the endless string of poorly edited works coming off their presses that they will at last see the need to once again employ editors.

About the Author

Trevor Bryce is an Honorary Research Consultant at the University of Queensland and Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities. He has held positions as Reader in Classics and Ancient History, University of Queensland, Professor of Classics and Ancient History, University of New England (Australia), and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Lincoln University, New Zealand. He is the author of numerous works on the ancient Near East. His most recent publications are The Kingdom of the Hittites (2005), and The Trojans and their Neighbours (Routledge, 2006).

First Rate and Long Overdue

With the publication of Creative Explorations, David Gauntlett and his colleagues at the Art Lab at the University of Westminster establish themselves as leaders in the advancement of methodological approaches to the study of contemporary identity. Superbly written and masterfully interdisciplinary, this book speaks to a broad swath of practitioners and researchers seeking to gain deeper understandings of people and the way local and global forces influence, and are influenced by, expressions of self.

By moving beyond the role of researcher as fly on the wall and subject as local informant, Gauntlett challenges us to investigate processes of self-representation through art and video, even Lego building, in order to explore identity under much more authentic contexts than interviewing and observation alone. It is no longer the case that our subjects are actors within closed social systems where the researcher bewares of poisoning the local culture, but rather are part and parcel of the same local and global forces as the researcher. It is no longer enough simply to be reflexive, but rather to engage our subjects with tools of modern media and to view the process of personal creative expression as fertile ground for gaining understandings of identity development anywhere in the world, even in the most remote places or under the most dire circumstances.

While contemporary researchers of Visual Anthropology/Sociology and Visual Culture keep the tools of media production in the hands of the researcher and locate their subject of study in the products of self-representation, Gauntlett advocates a truly visionary, and long overdue, methodology that puts these tools in the hands of our subjects and locates the site of our research in the process, rather than the product, of creative exploration.

As an educational researcher and teacher, I consider this book a landmark and essential text for anyone interested in qualitative research and the study of identity.

About the Author

Kenneth F. Kitchell Jr. has been a Professor of Classics at University of Massachusetts Amherst for 15 years. Prior to this he was Professor of Classics at Louisiana State University and a high school Latin teacher. For years his research has focused on animals and animal lore of antiquity and from the Middle Ages, especially the works of Albertus Magnus. His other main area of interest is in Latin and Greek pedagogy and its history.

Kenneth Kitchell is an expert on fauna of classical Greek and Roman antiquity. This is a serious scholarly encyclopedia collecting interesting anecdotes about animals with the ancient references. Exactly what I hoped for.
