About the Author

Mara Einstein is an Associate Professor of Media Studies at Queens College as well as a professor at the business school at New York University.  Prior to teaching, she worked as a marketing executive at NBC and MTV Networks as well as at a number of major advertising agencies.

Brands of Faith

This book really helped me to understand why red strings were so in vogue these past few years and why Christian music and books have invaded B&N. It also gave me insight into why our political system is being overrun by religion. Einstein is a professor of media studies and a former MTV Networks exec. so she really knows her stuff in terms of marketing and how it infiltrates our consciousness. She does a great job in explaining how the lines between religion and popular culture have become blurred. While the book provides a great analysis of the growth in Christian media, the real payoff is in the chapter that compares Joel Osteen to Oprah Winfrey.
Also, don't let the picture on the cover confuse you. It's not just about Christianity. All faiths are affected by the marketing of religion and the chapter on Kabbalah (with a great explanation of the Madonna influence) is truly entertaining.

About the Author

Neil Powe is a lecturer in planning at the University of Newcastle. His main research interests include non-market environmental valuation and rural planning. Market towns research has provided the focus of his rural planning research and he has co-authored a number of journal articles on the subject. He has also written a forthcoming book on environmental valuation.

Trevor Hart is visiting research fellow in the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, University of Newcastle. He has a number of years’ experience of practice in planning and economic development in rural areas and has recently been engaged in a number of evaluation studies involving the impact of enterprise policy in deprived communities, graduate recruitment in small businesses and the impact of social enterprise.

Tim Shaw is head of the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, University of Newcastle. His research has covered various aspects of regional planning and he has many years’ experience dealing with issues of rural planning. He has co-authored journal articles on market towns and is currently editing a special issue on green belts for the Journal of Environmental, Planning and Management.

The battleship 'Northern Spirit' was torpedoed in the engine room, and began to sink rapidly. 'Abandon Ship!' shouts Captain Flintheart. But few of the lifeboats are intact. One boat, desperately overloaded, manages to struggle away from the sinking vessel, Flintheart at the prow. The cold, grey waters of the Atlantic around it are filled with screaming, desperate voices, begging to be rescued.

But faced with the grim knowledge of the danger of capsizing the little boat, endangering the lives of these already on board, should any more sailors be picked up and rescued?

perfect toilet-reading

The only time I ever decided to write a piece of fan mail it was to the author of a philosophy book. There. Now you know the full depth of my sadness, but I know you will accept me as I am.
The book was 101 Philosophy Problems by Martin Cohen. It was full of such puzzles as if an object can only ever be in one place at one time, how anything can be moving? Or if you replace every component of a ship piece by piece, at what point does it become a different ship?
At the end you got all Cohen's own thoughts on the questions, always thought-provoking, funny and iconoclastic about the whole business of philosophy.. Apart from anything, it's the most perfect toilet-reading I know.
The brilliant thing about it was that, while so many other philosophy books make your brian shut down after 3 pages , leaving you feeling baffled and stupid Cohen simply got you thinking for yourself. He made it all so lucid, comprehensible and fun, you felt all the other philosophy writers must be charlatans, blinding yo with gobbledegook to make themselves feel clever.
Another great value of the book is that Cohen is committed to the ancient but now somewhat eccentric idea that philosophy should not just be abstract conundrums but should equip us to live better lives.
101 Ethical Dilemmas is the natural sequel to that wonderful book, and as the title suggests it focuses more specifically on ... well, work ti tout for yourself.
Many of the issues Cohen invites us to grapple with here are pressing concerns in modern life. He deals with civil disorder against evil corporations, internet shopping, designer babies, job applications, 'collateral' damage', war against tyrants, cinematic sex, CCTV surveillance, US state terrorism, the abolition of poverty and the wisdom of George W. Bush.
In amid this are al the nuts-and-bolts issues. Can the end justify the means? Is it right to lie when the truth will hurt? Do we only behave decently because of social restraints? Do we judge right and wrong with our feelings or reason? Why, if at all, should humans be treated from other animals? Are good intentions more important than good results?
Cohen also casts an ethically critical eye over the parables of Jesus, as well as the teachings of Buddha and various Church fathers.
This book is rather harder work than its beloved predecessor. As if making a concerted effort to educate as well as inspire us, Cohen includes many passages from the great philosophers. Consequently, this second 101 is twice as long as the first.
Sometimes he weaves the quotations into dialogue, or, for example turns a long extract from Descartes into a lecture given while he dissects a live chimpanzee. Creative, certainly, but it can actually make the philosophy all the harder to follow.
Likewise the playfulness of Cohen's questions can sometimes leave you wondering what he's actually getting at.
Above all though, its great to have some of this stuff. It's entertainment that trains you to think more intelligently about discerning right and wrong and about how you choose to act. God knows, in 2003 we need that.
If you're interested, get the first book first (unless you have a particular reason to prefer 'ethics' to 'philosophy') There'll be plenty of time to graduate to the other one when you're smitten, and write fan mail.
I never did write that letter, in the end. But then neither has the book ever left my toilet side.

Entertaining intro to ethics

Mr Cohen has created a highly entertaining introduction to ethics. After flipping through the first twenty pages in the library, I considered using this book as a reading and discussion text for advanced EFL students. However, I changed my mind when I examined the glossary. I was very surprised to find that the extremely rich field of Jewish ethics was not worth a direct mention (unless I missed a line somewhere) and Christian ethics is only mentioned in passing (mostly negative). What is hard to believe is that an entire page in this small glossary is devoted to praise for the contribution of Islam and Islamic ethics (but nothing whatsoever about taqiyya, kitman, kuffar, jizya and dhimmis). Here is an ethical thinker who is willing to dish out well-deserved criticism of American policy, but is unaware of how blind he is to his own ethical heritage (Readers eager to read anecdotes reflecting the Jewish take on ethics would be well-served by reading A Code of Jewish Ethics: Volume 1: You Shall Be Holy & A Code of Jewish Ethics, Volume 2: Love Your Neighbor as Yourself). Despite the flaws of 101 Ethical Dilemmas, I would still give this book four stars for its entertainment value and a recommendation for a beginner's bookshelf.

This book is the first to provide a comprehensive review of innovation in tourism, while also considering how tourism itself contributes to innovative local, regional and national development strategies.

This timely book places tourism innovation in the context of current academic and policy concerns relating to knowledge, competition, and the management of change. A substantial introductory chapter provides an overview of what makes innovation in tourism both distinctive from, and similar to innovation in other economic sectors. This is followed by three general scene setting chapters which explore how competition and the search for competitiveness drive tourism innovation, how knowledge transfers and knowledge creation lead the process, and how institutions shape innovation. These provide a coherent theoretical framework for understanding the roles of different agencies in innovation, ranging from the state, to the firm, to the consumer. The next four chapters analyze innovation at different scales. Two chapters review the territorial dimensions of innovation through the fresh perspectives of the national and regional innovation systems, followed by reviews of the determinants of innovation in the firm, and the contested and complex role of entrepreneurship. The final chapter summarises the importance of understanding tourism innovation.

This is a groundbreaking volume which provides an accessible introduction to a key but neglected topic. It provides a readable account of the multidisciplinary research on innovation and relates the emerging theoretical framework to tourism. A clear conceptual framework is complemented by fifty boxes which provide a range of illustrative international case studies.

About the Author

C. Michael Hall is Professor of Marketing at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand and Docent in the Department of Geography at the University of Oulu, Finland. Co-editor of Current Issues in Tourism, his main research interests are in the relationships between mobility and regional development, tourism, food, global environmental change and environmental history.

Allan M. Williams is Professor of European Integration and Globalization at the London Metropolitan University, UK. He is the author and editor of a number of books on tourism including Critical Issues in Tourism (2002) and Tourism and Tourism Spaces (2004), both with Gareth Shaw; and A Companion to Tourism Geography (2004), with Alan Lew and Michael Hall.
