About the Author

Lynne Hunt is Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) in the Faculty of Computing Health and Science, Edith Cowan University (ECU), Perth, Australia. She is the recipient of three ECU awards for teaching excellence and the 2002 Australian Award for University Teaching in the Social Science category. She also won the 2002 Prime Minister’s Award for Australian University Teacher of the Year.

Adrian Bromage is a researcher at Coventry University’s Centre for Higher Education Development. He is currently involved in two major research projects, the evaluation of the University’s ‘Learn Online’ initiative and the ESERC-funded ETL project.

Bland Tomkinson is University Adviser on Pedagogic Development at the University of Manchester and Director of the Teaching and Learning Support Centre, UMIST.

Steven Seidman is Professor of Sociology at the State University of New York at Albany. He is the author of, among other books, Romantic Longings: Love in America, 1830-1980 (Routledge, 1991), Embattled Eros: Sexual Politics and Ethics in America (Routledge, 1992), Difference Troubles: Queering Social Theory and Sexual Politics (1997), Beyond the closet (Routledge, 2002), and The Social construction of sexuality (2003). He co-edited Social Postmodernism: Beyond Identity Politics (1995) and edited Queer Theory/Sociology (1996) and the Lesbian and Gay reader (2002).

Nancy Fischer is an Assistant Professor in the Sociology Department at Augsburg College, Minneapolis. Her research and teaching is in the areas of urban sociology, sexuality and the sociology of law.

Chet Meeks is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at Georgia State University. His interests include contemporary social theory, sexuality studies, and cultural sociology.

Anna Motz is a Consultant Clinical and Forensic Psychologist with the Thames Valley Forensic Mental Health Services. She has extensive clinical experience with women as perpetrators and victims of violence and with the staff teams who work with them. She has written widely on this topic and is the Past President of the International Association for Forensic Psychotherapy.

A Superb Clinician Takes Aim at An Impossible Social Topic, Female Violence, and renders Important Truths for all of us

It is difficult to think of writing a book review about female violence and then say I loved it but I did. This is a superbly written book, updated and well referenced. Dr. Motz has accomplished the impossible, making a technical clinical book about an unspoken topic in forensic psychology that is female violence, both scientific and superbly readable. The chapter on violence against the self and anorexia was particularly well presented and persuasively argued for the inclusion of violence against the embodied self in women where the whole body and not simply the genital is infused with eroticism and also violence. In this sense her inclusion of a chapter on female deliberate self harm, included under the title of female violence, is well deserved. Dr. Motz works with very dangerous women who have done horrible violence against themselves and others, sometimes their children. The idealized mother model that Estella Weldon wrote about in her book Madonna and the Whore alerts us to how we need to keep alive the idea that women cannot be violent and it all must be a mistake, despite the facts of the case. Anna Motz teaches us differently. She bravely treads where few chose to go. And her rendering of her experience helps one to understand and empathize with the deep pain these women experience and how estranged some of them are from their bodies during acts of violence and how violence against their children is also violence against their own bodies, where the sexual self resides and is embodied. And the whole idea of having a profession focusing on women's violence and their crimes against their children and their bodies makes most people cringe with disbelief. I am also thinking about the era that Larry Wolff wrote about in his book Child Abuse in Freud's Vienna and how newspaper articles about women who killed their children were always couched in heroic idealized acts of protection and redemption and never as cruel acts again the child. Most psychologists would shrink away from the responsibilities of writing about female violence. But reading this book makes one respect Dr. Motz's instincts and sensitivity to tackle a difficult social and psychological problem in forensic psychology and to render the confused mess of female violence with a clarity and insightfulness that is thoroughly enriching to the reader's experience. In effect her book is a tour de force combining both the science of psychology and research into female violence with the drama of the individual narratives. Given the paucity of research and clinical reporting on female violence this is one of the best books written on the subject. Bravo.

Brad Williams suggests that kankyo seibi has not worked primarily because Russia’s troubled transition to a liberal democratic market economy has manifested itself in ways that have ultimately increased the South Kuril Islands’ intrinsic and instrumental value for the Sakhalin public and regional elite. This in turn has limited the impact from the twin transnational processes of cultural and economic exchange in alleviating opposition to the transferral of these disputed islands to Japan.

Drawing upon a wealth of primary and secondary sources from both countries, this book utilises levels of analysis and an analytical framework that incorporates national and subnational, as well as governmental and non-governmental forces to discuss a relatively unexplored aspect of Russo-Japanese relations. As such, Resolving the Russo-Japanese Territorial Dispute will appeal to students and scholars of Asian politics, international relations and post-communist states.
