A wonderful guide for the industry

Wynford Hicks, currently spending the rest of his days teaching cricket to locals in his adopted French home, thoroughly deserves his idyllic existence after helping thousands of journalists through their exams and careers with this stunning guide. He describes in plain English when and where to use different forms of punctuation, how to properly construct a sentence and make enjoying an article as easy as possible for today's busy reader. The section on journalistic style sticks two elegant fingers firmly in the face of English teachers who cry bad grammar at the merest hint of beginning a sentence with a proposition or dabbling with the GCSE demons of the split infinitive. The chapter on tabloidese is hilarious, chatting as it does about a employee who slammed his boss in a bid to win favour with colleagues and now fears he will be axed. The question he asks is do you ever here people conversing in this manner at a bus stop? He also launches an offensive against 'posh' and 'trendy' words, and helps writers resist the urge to use them simply to impress their colleagues, while bewildering the hapless reader. Invaluable.

About the Author

Iain Robertson is deputy academic director and head of art business studies at Sotheby's Institute of Art. He is an Asia correspondent for the international edition of The Art Newspaper, advisor to the Asia Art Archive, Hong Kong and honorary director of education of MOMA Beijing. His book, Understanding International Art Markets and Management, was published by Routledge in 2005.

Derrick Chong is a senior lecturer in management at Royal Holloway, University of London. He is also consultant lecturer in art business at Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London and Singapore, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts (FRSA). It's a text book. No more, no less. Some of the articles within are well written, some are not. Overpriced for what it is and its content. Also, with regard to Amazon, I would have expected after spending so much money on a new copy I would indeed receive a 'new' copy. But my copy arrived with the front cover folded over. Quality control in handling, packaging would be in need of a change perhaps.

This is a great book that has helped me understand the history of Arab cities and the varying development patterns across the region. I strongly recommend it for anyone interested in the Middle East. It's also a quick primer on any of the cities featured in the deep dive section. The section on Riyadh was excellent.

About the Author

Eszter Szalczer is Associate Professor of Theatre at the University at Albany, State University of New York. She is the author of Writing Daughters: August Strindberg's Other Voices (2008), as well as numerous articles and book chapters on Strindberg both in English and Swedish.
