About the Author

Hillary Rodrigues  was born in India and has spent many years living, traveling, and studying Eastern religions in South and South-east Asia. He has over a dozen years' experience teaching the Hindu religion to undergraduate students at the University of Lethbridge, where he has been honored with the Distinguished Teaching Award.

An excellent black and white introduction

Content Summary: This book reviews in considerable detail the Vedic texts and history, the epics of the Ramayana, Mahabharata, plus the major sects of Saivism, Vaisnavism, Saktism, etc. It has some review of Gandhi, Ram Mohun Roy, Sri Ramarskishna, and others. I found it to be all a teacher could want for a college level introductory book. It is thorough, and includes also some information on schools of thought and temples that other books do not go into. It touches only lightly upon Hinduism and Jainism, however.

Analytical Review: I think this is a great book for college kids. After having a world religion class, it will go into more detail on the gods, goddesses, rituals, beliefs, schools of thought, and give students a fairly thorough introduction to Hinduism. I only wish there were more pictures, and at least some color pictures. The writing is good, engaging - at times dense - but a splash of color would help. No doubt the black and white format saves considerably on expense. I think that this is a fine introductory book in spite of that problem.

About the Author

Mark McLelland is a research fellow in the Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies at the University of Queensland. He is the author of Male Homosexuality in Modern Japan (RoutledgeCurzon) and co-editor of Japanese Cybercultures (Routledge).

Romit Dasgupta lectures in Japanese language, Japanese Studies, and Asian Studies in the School of Social and Cultural Studies at the University of Western Australia. He has published widely on the topic of Japanese masculinity in edited collections and academic journals.
