About the Author

Luis I. González de Vallejo; Professor of Geological Engineering at the Complutense University of Madrid, where he is also Director of the MSc Courses in Geological Engineering. He has dedicated his professional career in geological engineering to consulting, research and teaching, and he has conducted a large number of geological and geotechnical investigations for the design and construction of tunnels, dams and foundations in Spain and Central and South America, including landslide and earthquake hazard analysis, large excavations and site assessment for nuclear power plants and radioactive waste disposal.

He has written over 120 papers in journals and proceedings as well as five books. Associate Editor of Soils and Rocks and Member of the Editorial Board of several scientific journals, he has been invited to present the 2nd Mariano Ruiz Vazquez Lecture, at the Academy of Engineering of Mexico, in 2007, and the XXVII Manuel Rocha Lecture, at the Portuguese Geotechnical Society, in 2010.

Mercedes Ferrer; Senior Research Officer at the Geological Survey of Spain and Associate Lecturer on Rock Mechanics at the Complutense University of Madrid, where she graduated in Geological Sciences and obtained her doctorate for her research on the deformability and failure mechanisms of soft rocks. She has carried out research projects on geological hazards in Spain, Italy and Central and South America, particularly on landslides and geo-hazard mapping for urban planning, mitigation and prevention purposes.

She has written over 100 papers and research reports on geological hazards, landslides and slope stability. At present she is leading a research project on the causes and failure mechanisms of the mega-rockslides of volcanic islands flanks.

I was asked to review this book by the publishers. That was 2 to 3 years ago. As it turns out, I couldn't write my review because Dr Allen Hathaway beat me to it (Env. and Eng.Geoscience. vol XVIII, no. 2, May 2012, pp 209-210). So here is my belated substitute Review- the only one I have written for Amazon, I think.

I am a Geological Engineer. I can say that with unabashed certainty, given I have an education in Geological Engineering (UBC, 1978) and subsequent professional career. I also have degrees in Geotechnical Engineering, So, I understand the difference between Geological and Geotechnical Engineering- at least as they are practised in the USA. Except here there are almost no Geological Engineers- instead the default discipline is Engineering Geology. Once upon a time, especially in Canada,Geological Engineers practised Geotechnical Engineering, Rock Engineering, Engineering Geology. Groundwater Engineering, etc. Indeed: few geoprofessionals (particularly Geotechs) understand what a Geological Engineer is anymore (see my opinions at http://edmedley.com/blog/2011/02/06/engineering-geologists-ne-geological-engineers/).Nowadays, the fields are regrettably represented by a myriad of specialized publications.

This gorgeously produced, excellently-written book does a a very fine job of describing the differences between the various flavors of Geological Engineering as it was, and has become toda, covering the salient technical background for them all. As I look at my several hundred professional books, I wonder if I should not just give them all away and stick with this book.I jest of course... Nevertheless i cannot find the equal of this book on my well-stocked shelves,

The book covers the field superbly. It would make an excellent reference for professional Engineering Geologists and Geotechnical Engineers - for the then to understand what the other is trying to say). It would be an apt and economical text book. Being a hardback, it is remarkable value - I am teaching a course in Engineering Geology where the required Earth Sciences text is a $150 paperback (although it too is a lovely book).

I particularly liked the abundant color images and the clear graphics. For a book written in Spanish and then translated into Italian and English, I could find no jarring syntax errors. It is crammed with reference to practical experience. My only criticism is an old man's comment there is no apparent reference to the use of stereo-photos. It is all well and good that there is an abundance of satellite imagery available nowadays, but in my opinion, not looking at aerial images in stereo vision is not good enough.

There are many references, Although there is a European emphasis to the book (and units arr SI), I found the "regionality" not at all distracting. i like travel, so learning about geological problems elsewhere in the world was a treat.

Bottom line: this is indeed one of the few books that I insist"belongs on your shelf" if you are an Engineering Geologist or a Geotechnical Engineer curious about how the Other Half lives.

This book is an authorised translation and significantly updated version of Vallejo's and Ferrer's Spanish edition of 2002, with expert technical review by an English professor. Most of the contributing authors are also from universities in Madrid, and sincere congratulations are due from all future users of this book. Undoubtedly, it is going to prove to be one of the very best broad-reference books for a very large number of educators, geologists, engineering geologists, soil mechanics and rock mechanics specialists, and hydro-geologists. It is the wealth of very informative diagrams, figures and interesting photographs, which make this book so desirable to possess. There is material to interest `everyone' who has curiosity about the natural terrain and man-made structures around us. Congratulations to the authors, to the editors, and to the producers of this landmark publication.

Excellent Reference

A well written, well documented and well illustrated book I ever came across. This reference book got everything from soil mechnics to rock mechnaics. The examples and dicussion are practical. Being a practicing engineer this book got all the tools you need. I would recommeded to have this book in your reference collection. Good Job.

Despite the spooky title and cover art, this is not a collection of Gothic ghost stories or fireside tales. These accounts of pre-modern beliefs (spanning the late Middle Ages to the late 17th century) employ serious scholarship. Oldridge contends that examining the so-called "strange" beliefs of the past can help us achieve a richer understanding of history. "If we can begin to understand why a French judge warned people about demonically possessed apples in 1602," he writes, "we might start to unravel the intellectual context in which he lived." But more importantly, Oldridge hopes that grasping the context of these beliefs will encourage readers to take a critical look at their own preconceived ideas. If the book suffers from anything, it is an intellectual earnestness and over-seriousness most evident in Oldridge’s constant insistence that the majority of the people he writes about were acting with "good intentions." For example, in a chapter on the rationale behind the execution of heretics in Medieval times, Oldridge notes that "the pious desire to retrieve souls from damnation could, of course, conceal more worldly motives for suppressing dissent, but it would be unduly cynical to assume this was normally the case." In moments like this, it seems that Oldridge’s single-minded adherence to his thesis—that "bizarre" past behavior and beliefs are entirely rational when taken in context—blinds him to the instances when people may very well have had impure motivations. That said, this is still a fascinating historical study that encourages self-reflection.

A smart, fun book with an excellent (if surprising) point

Here we have a fun, fascinating, and insightful book which starts out strong -- but which REALLY hits its stride and makes its point in the final two chapters. From witches and werewolves to demons and walking corpses, this is an illuminating romp into the medieval worldview.

So what exactly is Oldridge's point in writing this book? Simply this: The people of the medieval and Renaissance worlds were not ignorant, superstitious, irrational, bestial, or stupid. They had the same brains and intelligence that we have. Their actions and beliefs, far from being irrational, were perfectly sensible given their worldview. Furthermore, we are no better: The modern West has plenty of irrational beliefs and habits of our own!

Thought-provoking, honest, and exceedingly readable, Oldridge has produced a work which educates, entertains, and gently rattles about our assumptions of our own superiority. I highly recommend this book.

Fascinating look at beliefs of the past

This book explains clearly and convincingly why the people of the medieval and early modern periods believed in things that seem to us biazarre and irrational. If you want to understand why people believed in witchcraft,werewolves, the persecution of heretics, the trying of animals for crimes against humans etc, this book explains it all. It clearly shows that the beliefs of past times were no more irrational than our own, given the way people knew the world to be. If you read this book you can understand why, for instance,in 1545 it seemed reasonable to the townsfolk of Saint-Julien-de-Maurienne in France to sue a plague of flies for destroying a vinyard.

More disconcertingly, the book also shows that our own modern beliefs are often no more rational than the beliefs of the past, and that for instance the same reasons that led people to accept the truth of confessions of witchcraft, led people in modern times to accept the reality of Satanic abuse. If you pride yourself on being more rational than folk in past times, your opinion may be shaken by this book. The book is written in a lucid, witty style that makes it pleasantly easy to read for the unscholarly (like me), and should be enjoyed by anyone with an interest in history and why people believe what they do.

An Eye-Opening Scholarly Work

This book puts into perspective the way we modern humans think about the world. In pre-modern times, educated people thought very seriously about such things that today most of us would consider absurd, e.g.., werewolves, witches, walking dead, etc. Also, in those olden times, people thought rather differently about God, angels, saints, demons, demonic possessions and the devil than most of us do today. Intelligent, educated thinkers of pre-modern times had a way of looking at things that may seem strange to us yet were perfectly in line with their times. The logical arguments that they used to address their contemporary problems had common sense structure - only their starting assumptions were vastly different from those we would use today. One can only guess at what humans living, say, a thousand years from now will think about our own ways of viewing the world. Through discussing specific cases and quoting contemporary writers, the author of this excellent book does a commendable job of illustrating the above. This book is hard to put down and I heartily recommend it.

A brief introduction surveys the scanty sources which document Leo’s early life, and sets his pontificate in its historical context, as the Western Roman Empire went into serious decline, and Rome lost its former status as the western capital. Annotated translations of various excerpts of Leo’s letters and homilies are organised around four themes dealing with specific aspects of Leo’s activity as bishop of Rome:

Bronwen Neil is the Burke Senior Lecturer in Ecclesiastical Latin in the Faculty of Theology and Philosophy and Associate Director of the Centre for Early Christian Studies at Australian Catholic University (ACU). Her publications include Latin and Greek text editions of Maximus Confessor and Pope Martin I, and the Routledge Early Church Fathers volume on Leo the Great. Her most recent books, both co-authored with Pauline Allen, are Crisis Management in Late Antiquity (410 590 CE): The Evidence of Episcopal Letters (2013), and a translation of Gelasius I's letters as evidence for the late antique papacy. She and Pauline Allen are currently co-editing the Oxford Handbook of Maximus the Confessor.
